Donnell Students Honor Military Troop in Iraq

Military

As the 2007 holiday season was fast approaching, Sue Harrington-Williams, art teacher at Donnell Middle School began discussing with her students what they could do to possibly brighten an otherwise difficult holiday for those serving our country in Iraq. After brainstorming some ideas, everyone agreed it would be a nice gesture to send some original artwork to a troop who had some sort of connection to Donnell. A connection was made through Donnell’s counselor, Darlene Mack. Her son-in-law Chris Kimmet was serving in Iraq as a platoon leader. Students made hand-made gingerbread “people” out of construction paper and used a variety of materials to embellish them. Many students wrote a poem or included a note thanking them and wishing them the best during the holiday season. Ultimately, a very large package containing well over 200 gingerbread people, several pounds of candy, and many
hand written notes and poems were sent to Chris and his troop.
